Yacht Research Unit Kiel - Profile

Yacht Research Unit Kiel - Profile

Yacht Research Unit Kiel is a competence centre for yachting technology at the University of Applied Science Kiel in Germany. It cooperates with yacht designers, boat yards, sailmakers and professional sail sport campaigns to offer academic ressources and scientific methods for use in sailsport technology.
Main competences of YRU-Kiel are:

  • CFD based hydrodynamic flow analysis and form optimization
For hull and appendage optimization YRU-Kiel uses the latest RANSE flow simulation methods to analye hull shapes and appendage designs. Our tools include free surface flows, laminar-to-turbulent transition and incorporate solutions of equations of motion where applicable. Results of flow analysis are used as input to develop design alternatives.
  • CFD based aerodynamic flow analysis is carried out for upwind and downwind sails using vortex lattice or RANSE codes. Our aerodynamic methods take into account fluid structure interaction to predict sail deflection under wind load as well as rigg tensions to trim sails.
  • Twist Flow Wind Tunnel: YRU-Kiel operates a Twist-Flow-Wind-Tunnel dedicated to the investigation of sails. The TFWT allows model sizes with mast height of 1.8m. It is used by sailmakers and yacht designers to assess rig and sail design
  • Seakeeping investigations are carried out by YRU-Kiel using proprietary simulation methods which take into a account the specific characteristics of sailing yachts, in particular fins and sails.
  • The team of YRU-Kiel are flow analysis specialist with a vast amount of expertise from various sport campaigns. This team is dedicated to deliver to the professional sail sport community.

Please read the "Competences" and "References" pages for details of our main activities.
