YRU-Kiel analyses IMOCA 60 for VPLP Yacht Design
Kiel, August 2013: In a collaborative effort YRU-Kiel and VPLP Yacht Design investigated the new generation of IMOCA 60 to participate in the "Vendee Globe" round the world race starting 2016.
The revised rules for the next edition of the race allow two options of predefined rigs. In order to assess pros and cons of wing-mast rigs versus classical rigs an intensive wind tunnel session has been conducted at YRU-Kiel's twisted flow wind tunnel. On top CFD-investigations have been carried out.
Simon Watin, performance specialist at VPLP: « With the help of the YRUK we have the opportunity to realize a thorough assessment campaign on IMOCA rigs, to prepare for the next edition of the Vendee Globe. With the facilities available we can perform both numerical and experimental studies in order to have a complete picture of the subject “
